Exhibition: Roads to Wrocław

The parents and grandparents of today’s Wrocław community came from the eastern borderlands of interwar Poland, western Galicia, central Poland, regions of Małopolska and Wielkopolska, as well as Yugoslavia, France and the UK.

Halina Okólska, Manager at the Historic Museum of Wrocław, in a series of 35 interviews with the residents of Wrocław on their family stories and the reasons why their nearest and dearest travelled all the way to settle in the capital of Lower Silesia. The parents and grandparents of today’s Wrocław community came from the eastern borderlands of interwar Poland (today’s Lithuania, Belarus and Ukraine), western Galicia, central Poland, regions of Małopolska and Wielkopolska as well as former Yugoslavia, France and Great Britain. They had a variety of social backgrounds, education and tradition. Before they arrived in Wrocław, which was heavily affected by military operations and the siege of Festung Breslau in 1945, they had come through unimaginable hardship at Nazi-German concentration camps, Soviet forced-labour camps and POW camps. Some of them were resistance fighters.  Their children and grandchildren were born in Wrocław.

The stories showcased at the exhibition come with private photos, documents and personal memorabilia. The documents include:  a discharge from a Soviet forced-labour camp, a repatriation card, a certificate of baptism from Chernivtsi (today’s Ukraine), ID cards from a variety of Wrocław institutions, Wrocław University graduation diplomas. Interviews with the residents of Wrocław, together with photographs and documents, will also be published as a catalogue.

Admission: 15 PLN (adult), 10 PLN (reduced).
