Film costumes from CeTA collection at Four Domes’ Pavilion

The exhibition showcases film costumes from some of the celebrated Polish cinematic productions completed at Wrocław’s Feature Film Studio.

Costumes from Poland’s most celebrated cinematic productions by the legendary Wrocław-based Feature Film Studio, as well as costume designs, elements of stage design and photographic records, will be showcased in an exhibition organised by the Four Domes’ Pavilion, National Museum in Wrocław, in collaboration with the CeTA Centre for Audiovisual Technology. The costumes on display were sported by a stellar group of performers, including Zbyszek Cybulski, Beata Tyszkiewicz, Kalina Jędrusik, Leon Niemczyk or Anna Dymna, in films such as Ash and Diamonds, The Saragossa Manuscript, Our Folks or The Doll.

In November 2011, Wrocław’s Feature Film Studio was transformed into the CeTA Centre for Audiovisual Technology, which took over the studio’s wardrobe department. In 2013, on the initiative of CeTA Director Robert Banasiak, PhD, and with subsidies from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, a pioneering programme began to restore selected costumes under the supervision of costume designer Maria Duffek.  It is no coincidence that the costumes are on display at the Four Domes’ Pavilion. For several dozen years, the building was the property of Wrocław’s Feature Film Studio. Cinematic productions were shot and edited in its interiors, which were also used for storage or as props departments. In 2009, the building was transferred to the National Museum in Wrocław; from 2013–2015 it was renovated and restored to its original function as an exhibition space.

The exhibition showcases costumes featured in cinematic productions that span the Polish October of 1956 and the decline of Communist Poland in the late 1980s. The era is marked by two symbolic films: Ash and Diamonds (1958), which is a masterpiece of the Polish Film School, and The Curse of Snake Valley (1987), a domestic variation on the global New Adventure Cinema.
