Macbeth: new show at Capitol Theatre

In her production of Macbeth, Agata Duda-Gracz tells the story of guilt and temptation, the germ of evil in every individual and the tragic tangle of Antiquity and Christianity inherent in European culture.

The play is set in 11th-century Scotland, where human life matters very little. A man is worth as much as he proves in combat, and a woman  Murder is a way to get rid of the enemy and a method to shorten one’s way to the throne. Ruthlessness and courage are in demand, whereas pity, reflection and self-doubt are considered a weakness. The first of Macbeth’s murders only necessitates further butchery. This self-propelled mechanism annihilates its own architect, his life turning into angst. No one can keep their hands clean in the world of bloodshed.

In her production of Macbeth, Agata Duda-Gracz tells the story of guilt and temptation, the germ of evil in every individual and the tragic tangle of Antiquity and Christianity inherent in European culture. The director is extremely precise in her analysis of the interpersonal dynamics between the protagonists. In her examination of affinities, connections and motifs, she returns to historical sources to create an ambiguous and moving backdrop of the major themes in the play.
