This year's edition is devoted to the legacy of Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy. The composer may not be considered on a par with ingenious J.S. Bach, Haendel and Mozart, who patroned previous editions of the Academy. However, Mendelssohn's legacy goes well beyond the purely musical value of his works, as it play the major role in the momentous anniversary to be celebrated in 2017: 500th Anniversary of the Reformation.

Mendelssohn was not only a Romantic composer pure and simple. As a converted Lutheran, he also went down in history as a reformer of German sacred music and the restorer of the oratorio tradition. He was also the one who rediscovered J.S. Bach. With his performance of Saint Matthew Passion, Mendelssohn brought back the J.S. Bach's repertoire back to life after 100 years of his absence. This marked the renaissance of Bach's legacy and its meteoric rise to fame in concert halls and the history of music.

Accordingly, this year's academy comes to a climax with a performance of Saint Matthew Passion in Mendelssohn's arrangement. The Wrocław Baroque Orchestra, Dresdner Kammerchor and NFM Choir will be conducted by Hans-Christoph Rademann.

Master class applications will have been accepted from musical secondary schools and musical academies by 13 January.
