190 Years of the Synagogue under White Stork in Wroclaw – exhibition in the Synagogue

The exhibition will be dedicated to the history of the Old Synagogue, its role in the life of the Wroclaw Jewish Commune and people associated with it.

The aim of the exhibition is to celebrate 190 years of existence of the Synagogue under White Stork – a place of tremendous importance on the map of Wroclaw. The exhibition will be dedicated to the history of the Old Synagogue, its role in the life of the Wroclaw Jewish Commune and people associated with it.

The first prayers in the Wroclaw Synagogue took place in April 1829. The Synagogue was closed and brought to ruin in the postwar period and restored as a place of cult in 1995. This would not have been possible without a group of people who, thanks to their determination, managed to raise funds and carry out a breakneck renovation. The leader of this group was Jerzy Kichler – the spiritus movens of the restoration of the Jewish community in Wroclaw. He is also the curator of the exhibition 190 Years of the Synagogue under White Stork and the initiator of the celebration of the anniversary of the temple that will occur during the 21st SIMCHA Jewish Culture Festival in Wroclaw.

The organiser – the PRO ARTE 2002 Foundation in co-operation with the Bente Kahan Foundation and the Jewish Religious Commune in Wroclaw – will present an exhibition of photographs documenting the history of the Synagogue against the background of dramatic events of the last two centuries. Its visitors will learn about distinguished figures of the Breslau Commune, such as Abraham Geiger and Zacharias Frankel. The exhibition will also show the Synagogue restoration process and the life of the Wroclaw diaspora after World War II.

It is also aimed at promoting the idea of interreligious respect and tolerance, combating signs of antisemitism and xenophobia and integrating the local community in the joint acquisition of knowledge about Wroclaw Jews and their temple. The exhibition will be accompanied by a lecture, a discussion and a film show. It will be available to visitors on the 1st balcony of the Synagogue from 5th June till the end of August.
