Four Denominations District

Data aktualizacji: 2016-10-17

Four Denominations District (Dzielnica Czterech Wyznań) is situated in the centre of Wrocław, in direct proximity to the Rynek (Market Square). It occupies an area separated with ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego, Św. Mikołaja, Pawła Włodkowica and Św. Antoniego.

It is not a district in its traditional, urban meaning; nevertheless, the exceptional character of this place resulted in the fact that since 1995, this place has been called the Four Temples District (Dzielnica Czterech Świątyń), Four Denominations District (Dzielnica Czterech Wyznań) or Mutual Respect District (Dzielnica Wzajemnego Szacunku). Its unique character is decided by the magnificent monuments of sacral architecture. Within a distance of only 300 metres, there are: Nativity of Saint Mary Orthodox Church (sobór Narodzenia Przenajświętszej Bogurodzicy), church of St. Anthony of Padua (kościół św. Antoniego z Padwy) – Roman Catholic temple, the White Stork Synagogue (Synagoga pod Białym Bocianem) and the Evangelical Church of God's Providevnce (kościół Opatrzności Bożej). In order to strengthen the cooperation between the dominations, the Council of the Mutual Respect District (Dzielnica Wzajemnego Szacunku) was appointed and has been in operation since 1996.

In 2005, the temples were joined with a cultural path, and the area in which they are situated was included in the regional development plan. The District was entered into the registry of monuments and considered as a monument to history. On 29 November 2012, at the place where ul. Kazimierza Wielkiego joins with ul. Św. Antoniego, the Crystal Planet (Kryształowa Planeta) was unveiled. This sculpture by Wrocław artist Ewa Rossano became another emblem of the District.

The Four Temples District constitutes a space for many cultural and educational events. The local Synagogue is a centre of a special meaning. It holds numerous artistic events; every holiday, a cycle of concerts and exhibitions called “Summer at the White Stork Synagogue” (“Lato w Synagodze pod Białym Bocianem”) is organised here. A similar cultural function is played by the nearby cinema Nowe Horyzonty. This is the first multiplex in Poland focused on artistic cinema, were the most important Wrocław film festivals are organised. New Horizons Festival (Festiwal Nowe Horyzonty) and American The film Festival gained recognition in the eyes of film audience, both in the country and abroad.

The numerous restaurants, cafés, pubs and music clubs situated in the Four Denominations District (among others, within the beautiful courtyard of the White Stork Synagogue surrounded with ancient walls) make it one of the most magical meeting places for Wrocław citizens.
